The Pin Contacts Of USB 3.0 A-Type Connector
According to USB-IF specifications, the USB 3.0 A-type connector has aggregate nine contacts. The four contacts (VBUS, D−, D+, and GND) in the back row are for the USB 1.x/2.0 backward compatibility, while the five pins in the front row are for the USB 3.0 connectivity. They are composed of two differential pairs and one ground (GND_DRAIN). The two additional differential pairs are for SuperSpeed data transfer; they are used for full duplex SuperSpeed signaling. The GND_DRAIN pin is for drain wire termination and to control EMI and maintain signal integrity.
There are nine contacts in the USB 3.0 A-type connector.
Fully Automatic Production and Inspection
The first picture shows one set of 5 contacts is being inserted into a blue housing in which 4 contacts were already on it. Once the contacts are set in, the connector will go to the conductivity and hi-pot 500V test (picture #2). Every USB connector must pass through this station, otherwise will be exclude automatically. And the last three pictures are the final step where the USB connector are being examined on the dimensions of the contacts. The CCD camera on the left side is to simultaneously check the height of the four contacts in the back row and the soldering length of the nine contacts. And the CCD camera on the right side is to check the flatness of the five contacts in the front row.
